FOB Origin vs FOB Destination

Important Note:

  1. Reseller pricing calculated in your shopping cart does not including shipping costs.
  2. These costs are marked TBD as they will be calculated & added later, unless you are handling shipping yourself (see below).

"FOB Origin" means:

  1. The Buyer manages & books the shipment with a carrier of their choice through their own freight service provider.
  2. The Buyer pays the carrier or service directly, for all freight costs associated with their order.
  3. The Buyer also takes on all risk of loss once the product leaves the Seller’s facility.
  4. The Buyer is responsible if the goods are lost, damaged, stolen, or otherwise diminished in value while in transit.
  5. It is the Buyer’s responsibility to ensure their shipment is insured for loss with their chosen carrier.
  6. The Seller’s only responsibility in this case, is to relay reasonably accurate cargo information to the Buyer so that they may obtain reasonably accurate rate quotes.

"FOB Destination" means:

  1. The Buyer still pays all freight costs associated with their order.
  2. However, the Seller manages the shipment and is responsible for the delivery if damaged or lost while in transit.
  3. The Seller retains the risk of loss until the goods reach the delivery destination.
  4. It is therefor the Seller’s responsibility to ensure their shipment is insured for loss by the carrier.

Example: BGC (Seller) and Client (Buyer)

For a shipment from BGC’s IL warehouse to a Client’s receiving location in WI.

  1. If BGC is managing the shipment (even though the Client is still pre-paying for it), then BGC is incurring the liability of the cargo while in transit, so we mark it as “FOB Destination - Wisconsin”.
  2. However if the Client is managing all aspects of the shipping themselves, then it would be marked as “FOB Origin - Illinois”, which means as soon as the freight leaves BGC’s IL warehouse the Client is 100% responsible for the product should it be lost, damaged or otherwise diminished in value during shipment.
