Tips for Cleaning Carpets with Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo & Cleaner

How to Dilute Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo:

  • One 40 oz bottle of Earth Friendly Products Carpet Cleaner will clean approximately six to ten average-sized rooms of carpet.
  • For the Spray-Rinse-Extract Method, Earth Friendly Products recommends that Carpet Shampoo/Cleaner be diluted at 1:40 and run directly through Rental Machines.
  • Used as a Carpet Pre-treatment, we recommend you dilute Their Carpet Shampoo at approximately 1:10 with HOT water in a pump sprayer, apply to carpet, let dwell, then rinse with hot water and mild vinegar solution (4-8 ounces vinegar to one gallon of water).
  • When properly used as a pre-spray followed with a diluted vinegar rinse, Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo will NOT leave a residue.
  • This Carpet Shampoo is very low sudsing so de-foamer should not be necessary, as long as product is not used more highly concentrated than recommended.

How to Remove Spots & Stains with Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo:

  • Dilute at 1:3 (1 part Carpet Shampoo to 3 parts water) to individually hand-treat and remove spots and stains from carpets, rugs & upholstery including food, coffee, blood, dirt, oil & more!

Tips for Cleaning Carpets with Earth Friendy Products Carpet Shampoo:

As the Owner of an Natural Carpet Cleaning Company for 21 years, I can tell you first hand that utilizing Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo/Cleaner (or any other carpet cleaning detergent) as a carpet pre-spray is a far more effective than running the Carpet Shampoo/Cleaner through an extraction machine using the spray-extract-rinse method.

  • Here are the Four Key Elements to Successfully & Effectively Clean Carpets with any carpet cleaner:
    1. Time: How long the carpet cleaner is in contact with the carpet before extracting.
    2. Temperature: How HOT the carpet cleaning solution is.
    3. Agitation: Provided using a high pressure water, a brush or a groomer.
    4. Concentration: How concentrated the detergent being utilized is.
  • Here's a comparison of two methodologies:
    • Adding Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo/Cleaner (or any detergent or chemical) to the carpet extraction machines hot water tank. This method is virtually useless.  Here are the reasons why:
      1. Time: It has virtually no dwell time
      2. Temperature: This is the ONLY thing is has going for it, and only with high powered, professional carpet cleaning truck-mounted machines which use HOT water in access of 200*F.
      3. Agitation: And it receives virtually no brushing or raking, only the gentle roll of the carpet wand over the fibers a split second before it is extracted.
      4. Concentration: The product is highly diluted when run through an extraction machine.
      • As you can tell, only 1 of the 4 crucial ingredients to effectively clean carpets is been utilized.
      • In multiple side by side tests, I was unable to recognize any difference between cleaning with detergent added to an extraction machine vs using just plain water.
    • Using Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo as a pre-spray, followed by Hot Water Extraction...
      • This technique is far superior!  Here are the reasons why:
      1. Time: The pre-spray is allowed to dwell on the carpet before being extracted for Many Minutes vs about 1 second (ever soaked a dirty pot or pan to remove baked on food?
      2. Temperature: Water can be as hot as you like. Around 110* is usually just fine.
      3. Agitation: The Carpet Cleaner can feel free to provide as much agitation as they like with this method, however when utilizing an extremely high powered extraction machine, water temps of over 200* and high pressure, I was able to completely skip this step and achieve the same results, except on the most heavily soiled, stubborn carpets.
      4. Concentration: With this method, there is a MUCH higher chemical concentration ... typically 10 to 100 times higher.
      • You see, with a pre-spray, you can use a much higher concentration of carpet cleaning solution because you will be following up with a thorough extraction, whereas when run directly through the carpet cleaning machine, any water left behind (and there always is) contains residual chemical.

How to apply & clean using Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo / Carpet Cleaner:

  • First, you should test the carpet for water & chemical absorbtion using a simple drip test.
    1. Pour a very small amount of plain warm water on the carpets pile while watching closely at it at eye level.
    2. If it sits on top of the carpet, tap it in a bit.
    3. Note wether it absorbs into the fibers, or appears to fall right down into the carpets backing.
    4. If the latter is true, pre-treat only very small sections of a rug at a time and only with a very small amount of detergent, otherwise the pre-treatment will fall straight to the backing and carry the soil with it causing a HUGE re-soiling mess when the carpet dries after it is cleaned. It may actually look worse than when you started.
  • Next, dilute Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo 1 part to 10 parts water.
  • Then pre-treat carpeted surface with Carpet Shampoo until the upper 1/3 of the carpets pile is lightly saturated.
    • Caution: Do NOT allow Carpet Shampoo to reach the carpets backing, because as with any carpet pre-spray, resoiling will become likely.
  • After pre-spraying Earth Friendly Products Carpet Shampoo on the Carpet, agitate or Rake in with a carpet brush.
  • Then let the solution dwell or soak in the carpets pile for approximately 10 minutes.
    • Caution: Do NOT let product dry on carpet. If it does, simply reapply and extract as usual.
  • Finally, extract with a mild vinegar and hot water solution and a hot water extraction machine.
    • Notes:  Agitation is optional, especially with high powered truckmounts, however it is the preferred method when using less powerful portable carpet cleaning extraction machines.
